Recognizing, Assessing, and Documenting Abuse in Older Adults

Older adult abuse is a pervasive yet frequently underrecognized form of violence that places older adults at significant risk for physical injury, psychological harm, and exploitation. This course is designed to equip forensic nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, assess, and respond to suspected abuse across clinical and forensic settings. Through presentation and case studies, forensic nurses will strengthen their ability to recognize subtle indicators of abuse, support patient safety, and contribute to effective intervention efforts. This course provides 1.5 CE upon completion of the course survey.
Objectives:
- Describe epidemiologic factors related to abuse and maltreatment among older adults.
- Discuss clinical presentations/indicators and forensic examination findings and biomarkers of older adult patients experiencing abuse.
- Apply response interventions to patients that are affected by abuse.
