Gunshot Wounds: Forensic Implications for Identification, Assessment, and Documentation

This training provides healthcare providers with a comprehensive, evidence-informed approach to the assessment and documentation of GSWs in the clinical setting. Participants will review general firearm concepts and the physical characteristics of gunshot injuries across varying ranges of fire. Emphasis is placed on accurate, objective documentation using standardized forensic terminology. The course includes a 34 page evidence-informed and peer-reviewed GSW guideline with case reviews that can be downloaded.  Completion of the course provides 1.5 CEs.

Objectives include:

  1. Identify the 6 physical characteristics of an entrance gunshot wound
  2. State at least one consideration for the evidence collection of a gunshot wound
  3. Distinguish 1 characteristic of a gunshot wound from each distance: contact, near contact, intermediate, distant
